The DMK chief underwent trachesotomy (insertion of a tube to the airway) to optimise breathing. The tube is not visible in the photo released by the hospital since his neck is covered with a cloth.
It may be recalled that Karunanidhi had demanded release of a photo or video of former chief minister J Jayalalithaa while she was undergoing treatment in Apollo Hospitals. But neither a photo nor a video was released. Jayalalithaa died on December 5.
